LMNO is pleased to present the exhibition little plants in the crannied sidewalk. This follows the artist?s six-month residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York within the framework of the renowned grant of the Claudine and Jean-Marc Salomon Foundation for Contemporary Art.
As a mischievous and expert connoisseur of the plant world, Lise Duclaux unveils the hidden beauties of the plants that spontaneously rise up stout-heartedly in New York. ?Aliens? , ?natives? or ?invasives?, in the course of her wanderings, she produced a number of drawings in which a few scraps of waste become entangled with the urban vegetation. Those drawings with their precious black lines dialogue with the humdrum colourful rejects of our unbridled consumption.
Questioning the ecological issues and the life force of plants, Lise Duclaux embarked a few years ago ? une récolte?on a harvesting , roaming in ? la zone de fauchage tardif?, a series of photographs of very tiny seeds whose splendour and diversity the meticulous printing renders through a modification of scale (one millimetre being rendered by one centimetre). Within the exhibition, she is presenting a selection of those seeds of plants encountered in Belgium then met again in New York?s asphalt.
Lise Duclaux has observed a few ?aliens?, those plants that have appeared in our cities, coming from all over the world. At a time when people tend to withdraw into themselves, nature for its part doesn?t know anything about the faint-heartedness of walls. Pacing up and down all the streets in the area round her residence, Lise Duclaux mapped the multifarious subversive presence of a Chinese plant called Tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima).
Throughout her stay Lise Duclaux also scattered the walls of her residence with different sentences, slogans or poetic odes, echoing that hand-to-hand between the human, the urban and natural forces.
During the vernissage the artist will produce a performance, overspreading the windows of the gallery with drawings and diagrams based on exchanges with the public concerning the presence of a Tree of heaven a few metres away from the gallery in a flowerbed facing the Baronian gallery. A dialogue will therefore eventuate between a plant that came to New York and to Brussels from a distant clime, and a force of resistance which incites us to the deepest respect.
Lise Duclaux is a French artist living in Brussels. She has recently had solo exhibitions at MHKA (2017) and at the Sint-Lukasgalerie (2017). Her work is currently to be seen in the collective exhibition ?A-Forest? at ISELP. Her integration projects are still present both at the LAM in Villeneuve-d?Ascq and at the MAC?s in Grand-Hornu. She had a monographic stand presented by LMNO at Art on Paper/BOZAR in 2017. Lise will have an exhibition in March, 2019 in the LLS Paleis of Antwerp.

LMNO verheugt zich erop u kennis te laten maken met de tentoonstelling little plants in the crannied sidewalk. Die volgt op de residentie van 6 maanden van kunstenares Lise Duclaux in het International Studio & Curatorial Program te New York, in het kader van de prestigieuze beurs van de Fondation pour l?Art Contemporain Claudine et Jean-Marc Salomon.
Met haar schalkse en gedegen kennis van de plantenwereld onthult Lise Duclaux de verborgen schoonheden van de flora die in New York spontaan en welig tiert. ?Aliens? , ?natives? of ?invasives?: tijdens haar dwaaltochten maakte ze tekeningen waarop her en der wat afval tussen het stadsgroen opduikt. Die tekeningen in delicate zwarte lijnen gaan de dialoog aan met de banale kleurenrijkdom van onze overconsumptie.
Haar fascinatie voor de milieuproblematiek en voor de overlevingskracht van planten voerde haar enkele jaren terug naar zones waar laattijdig wordt gemaaid. Tijdens haar zwerftochten aldaar oogstte ze een serie foto?s van heel kleine zaadjes waarvan de schoonheid en de diversiteit, dankzij een schaal¬verschil van 1 centimeter voor 1 milli-meter, in de heel nauwkeurige afdrukken zichtbaar wordt. Op de tentoonstelling is een selectie te zien van in België gevonden zaden die ze in het asfalt van de New-Yorkse voetpaden herzaaide.
Lise Duclaux observeerde een aantal ?aliens? ? planten die in de stad opduiken maar uit de vier windstreken komen. Ons tijdsgewricht heeft nogal de neiging in zichzelf gekeerd te zijn, maar de natuur laat zich niet door muren afschrikken. Ze doorliep systematisch alle straten van haar buurt en bracht de subversieve aanwezig¬heid van de welig tierende hemelboom, een Chinese exoot met de naam Ailanthus altissima, in kaart.
Daarnaast plakte Lise Duclaux tijdens haar verblijf diverse zinnen, slogans of poëtische odes op de muren van haar huis, die allen refereerden aan dit lijf-aan-lijfgevecht tussen de mens, de stad en de kracht van de natuur.
Tijdens de vernissage geeft de kunstenares een performance waarbij ze op de ramen van de galerij tekeningen en schema?s aanbrengt die gevoed zijn door uitwisselingen met het publiek over een hemelboom in de nabijheid van de galerij (in het bloemperk enkele meters verderop, tegenover Galerie Baronian). Zo komt een dialoog tot stand met een plant die, zowel in New York als in Brussel, uit een verre windstreek is gekomen en blijk geeft van een overlevingskracht die het grootste respect afdwingt.
Lise Duclaux is een Franse kunstenares die in Brussel woont. Haar werk was in 2017 te zien op individuele tentoonstellingen in het M HKA en in de Sint-Lukasgalerie. Momenteel loopt de tentoonstelling ?A-Forest? in het ISELP. Haar integratieprojecten in het LAM te Villeneuve-d?Ascq (FR) en in MAC?s Grand-Hornu zijn nog steeds te bezichtigen. Nog in 2017 was ze op Art on Paper/BOZAR met een monografische stand vertegenwoordigd door LMNO. Lise zal een tentoonstelling in maart 2019 in de LLS Palies van Antwerpen.
